VIP Way of St. James

WALKING

What IS

THE WAY OF ST. JAMES?

The French Way of the Camino de Santiago, the most traditional route to the tomb of the Apostle James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, crosses diverse landscapes rich in history. From the Pyrenees to Galicia, pilgrims pass through fields, mountains, and towns that showcase the cultural and natural wealth of Spain.

This journey is not only a spiritual pilgrimage but also an opportunity to connect with nature and uncover the historical heritage hidden along every stretch.

Each year, over 400,000 people of all ages and nationalities walk this path—on foot, by bike, or on horseback—in search of adventure and personal discovery.

EXPERIENCE

THE WAY BY FOOT

You experience a deep connection with nature—so different, yet equally beautiful in every place. You begin to breathe fresh air and notice the unique scents of the vegetation, alongside all the artistic history waiting to be discovered and learned from.

The warmth and care offered by the people along the Camino are unmatched—their smiles, their stories, and their kindness are a true gift to the heart.

The friendships that are formed and the experiences shared while walking are truly one of a kind.

There are so many gifts you receive along the way that, little by little, you forget about the fatigue, the discomfort, or any physical sensation—replaced by the feeling of someone discovering a wonderful new world.

A VIP EXPERIENCE

CAMINO VIP WALKING

When we invite you to experience a VIP Camino, it’s not about offering the luxuries you may already be used to. While we have selected the best hotels and restaurants along the route, that’s not the main feature of our experience.

What truly makes it VIP is the quality of our services—being there for you at all times, not just in case of emergencies.

It’s about having carefully chosen the support, accommodations, and gastronomic or cultural experiences so that you make the most of your journey—and even in moments of rest, you enjoy a delightful surprise…

A few glasses of wine around a fireplace in a medieval village, a theatrical performance, a room with a view of the town square, handpicked local dishes, picnics in nature, and visits to hidden gems off the tourist track.

All of this and much more is what makes our Caminos a truly VIP and unforgettable experience.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

You won’t have to worry about anything: your transfers, meals, insurance, and more will be taken care of by our team

AN ALL-INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE

Pilgrim Certificate

THE CREDENTIAL & COMPOSTELA

The pilgrim credential is a kind of passport that must be stamped at each stage of the route. It originated from the document issued in the Middle Ages, which served as a safe-conduct for pilgrims.

This credential is used as proof of passage to request the Compostela at the end of the pilgrimage.

With Zococamino, you won’t need to worry about these details. Your welcome kit includes the pilgrim credential, and we handle the Compostela’s presentation during the final gala dinner.

OUR PROGRAM

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

Arrival in Madrid

You will be able to check in at the hotel starting at 2:00 p.m.

Our staff will be at the hotel restaurant at the designated time to welcome you.

Afterward, we will share a welcome dinner and briefing to get to know all the participants and provide you with the instructions for the next day.

Madrid - León - O Cebreiro

Early morning meet-up in the hotel lobby. After breakfast, we’ll walk to Chamartín Station to take the high-speed train from Madrid to León.

From there, we’ll continue in a private van to O Cebreiro, with an introduction to the Camino along the way. We’ll visit Astorga, the picturesque village of Castrillo de los Polvazares, and hold a commemorative moment at Cruz de Ferro, a symbolic and mystical site on the Camino.

We’ll pass through Ponferrada and see its impressive Templar castle before heading to the heart of the Camino—O Cebreiro—where we’ll end the day in a magical setting, a small pre-Romanesque mountain village.

O Cebreiro - Sarria - Portomarín

We’ll depart by van to our starting point on the Camino, Sarria, with a stop to visit the San Roque monument along the way.

Sarria is located very close to the iconic final 100 kilometers—the minimum distance that must be walked to earn the Compostela.

This first stage never disappoints any pilgrim. It offers countless villages in the municipalities of Sarria, Paradela, and Portomarín, fine examples of Romanesque architecture, paved rural paths, trails and country lanes, medieval bridges, and rustic walkways.

Tonight, you’ll have the chance to share experiences with fellow pilgrims in the town’s arcaded square.

Portomarín - Palas de Rei

This stage is divided by the Ligonde mountain range, which also separates the Miño and Ulloa river basins and the municipalities of Portomarín and Monterroso.

Although the beginning is promising, offering a peaceful ascent through Mount San Antonio, the rest of the route follows alongside modest provincial and even national roads.

However, the journey is enriched by fine examples of Romanesque churches, the Lameiros wayside cross (*Cruceiro de Lameiros*), and the option to take a detour to visit the ruins of an important Celtic settlement.

Palas de Rei - Melide

Today, the effort will be rewarded, as it will be a day of recovery.

All the effort from yesterday will be restored with a peaceful yet beautiful day, walking through *corredoiras* (forest paths) and small streams.

The most important part of today is the delightful reward awaiting you—you will reach the village of Mellide, famous for its *pulperías* (octopus restaurants).

Here, you’ll savor the exquisite *pulpo a feira* (Galician-style octopus) served on wooden plates, with wine in clay mugs. It will be a true feast among many fellow pilgrims.

Melide - Arzúa

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll begin the day by leaving the town and crossing a river on stone slabs.

From there, you’ll head to Boente and its hermitage, where you can make an offering to the saint and stamp your credential.

There’s still a bit of effort to reach Arzúa, but we assure you that at the end of the stage, all the effort you put in will leave you feeling deeply satisfied.

In the evening, another great spot awaits for a tasty treat, as Arzúa is considered the capital of Galician cheese.

Arzúa - Amenal

The municipality of Arzúa hands over the baton to O Pino on a comfortable route, with gentler slopes and on paths.

Today will be a stage where the fatigue in your legs begins to show, but in your mind, you’ll feel the closeness to Santiago—it will all be excitement and anticipation.

You’ll pass through beautiful forests that seem straight out of a movie.

Before you know it, you’ll be in O Pedrouzo, and just three kilometers away, the end of the stage awaits you in Amenal.

Amenal - Santiago

The walk becomes serene, perhaps due to the nostalgia of nearing the end and not knowing what comes next.

On leaf-covered paths, amidst the last patches of eucalyptus and oak trees, the final villages appear.

The municipality of Santiago awaits on a hill, near the airport, guiding the pilgrim through the parish of Sabugueira.

From the vantage point of Monte do Gozo, you get the first panoramic view of Santiago de Compostela, marking the start of an urban journey that ends at the feet of the Baroque facade of the cathedral.

Obradoiro is both the end and the beginning.

Santiago of Compostela

After breakfast at the hotel, our services will come to an end.

We invite you to spend this day exploring Santiago at your own pace, whether through a self-guided tour or by visiting one of its museums.

If you plan to take a train from Santiago to another destination, we recommend arranging it in advance, as it is a highly frequented service in the city.

GALLERY OF MEMORIES

F.A.Q.

The Camino VIP Walking includes accommodation in double rooms with a private bathroom, where you’ll share a room with one person from the group each night (maximum of two people per room).

If you’re traveling as a couple, with family, or with friends, you can choose who you want to share a room with. If you’re traveling solo, we will assign you a roommate of the same gender, who will be your room companion throughout the trip.

Remember, you’ll only share with one person from the group. If you prefer a single room, we can discuss the additional cost for this option.

The Camino is a very popular destination, so it’s possible that in some locations, a single room may not be available.

The support vehicle is reserved exclusively for our walking pilgrims. Therefore, it is not possible to bring a companion who is not participating in the experience.

You can offer your companion the option to join the experience, and they will be able to use our support vehicle if they need to rest or skip a section. We will take care of accompanying and guiding them, while you can enjoy the journey at your own pace.

Please note that this option is available in our Premium Camino versions (customized, by quotation). If you’d like to discuss a Premium Camino package, feel free to contact us at info@zococamino.com.

To participate in this route and achieve your goal of walking 115 km, it’s important to be in good physical shape.

You don’t need to be an advanced hiker; a minimum level of preparation is sufficient. It’s recommended to start training one or two months before your Camino to avoid fatigue or muscle soreness during the experience.

If you’re not used to walking, you can begin a training program, walking an hour daily during the week and two hours on weekends, maintaining an average pace of 4-5 km per hour. Consistency is more important than walking long distances in one day and then stopping. We also recommend using the same footwear you plan to bring on the Camino.

The most important preparation is mental. You must be aware that you will be stepping out of your comfort zone and experiencing a different culture. You will also be sharing the journey with people from all over the world.

We will start early each day and walk an average of 20 km. Meal times will be different from what you’re used to, and we’ll spend most of our time in rural settings. It’s possible that we’ll experience rain, cold, or walk on wet terrain. But there’s nothing an adventurous mindset can’t handle.

The basic program includes paths with easy elevation changes.

Each pilgrim is allowed to bring one suitcase or backpack with a maximum weight of 23 kg, which will be transported from hotel to hotel. (If you bring more luggage with you to Spain, you must leave it in storage in Madrid)

To get used to the way pilgrims travel, avoid carrying unnecessary luggage on the Camino. You do not need: jewelry, books, fancy clothes or shoes, an iron or hairdryer, towels, sleeping bags, umbrellas, or wallets.

Suggested Packing List:

  • 3 pairs of hiking or adventure pants

  • 3 t-shirts

  • 2 spare t-shirts and sports pants for rest and strolling

  • Swimsuit for the spa

  • 1 lightweight long-sleeve t-shirt

  • 1 sweater (cardigan, pullover) or sweatshirt (also for summer)

  • 2 pairs of sneakers: one for walking and another for casual use. It’s important they’re not new

  • Shower footwear (flip-flops)

  • Seamless synthetic socks

  • 10 days’ worth of underwear

  • 2 sets of pajamas or sleepwear

  • 1 windproof rain jacket

  • Hat and sunglasses

  • Toiletries bag with basic items

  • High SPF sunscreen

  • Personal documentation

  • Medications you take or anticipate needing (Very important to bring the prescription)

  • 1 lightweight notebook (If you wish to jot down your thoughts or experiences)

  • Universal plug adapter

For certain selected dates, you will need the following warm clothing:

  • 1 waterproof coat

  • Wool hat

  • Wool gloves or first layer gloves

  • Neck warmer or scarf

You should keep in mind that lunch and accommodation on day 9 are not included, and our services will end with the celebratory dinner in Santiago de Compostela.

You may need to bring extra money if you wish to…

– Have meals and drinks not specified in the program.

– Upgrade to a single room.

– Bring extra luggage beyond the allowed limit (1 suitcase or backpack of max. 20 kg per person).

– Visit paid monuments.

– Buy souvenirs or any other personal items.

Yes, you can enjoy this route with children from 10 years old who have walking experience. It is necessary for one of the parents or a family member to take care of them and not leave them alone at any time, even if they choose to rest in the support car.

You can travel privately with your group as long as there are 12 or more people. In this case, you will also enjoy a special 10% discount on the total value of the trip.

If your group is smaller, we will accept more pilgrims until the 12 spots are filled.

The group must adjust to our available dates for the Camino VIP Andando.

If you wish to experience the trip on your chosen dates or have a completely private journey with a partner or a group of fewer than 12 people, you can opt to quote for a Camino Andando Premium.

The VIP Camino, whether by bike or on foot, is a pre-designed experience that takes place in a group on the dates we have selected. The activities and itinerary are carried out without any modifications.

The Premium Camino is the option we offer to design a Camino tailored to your needs. If you wish to travel privately, as a couple, or with your own group, add or remove stages, adjust the number of days, include other activities, etc., the Premium Camino is customized. It is priced based on a quote, as the price varies depending on dates, number of days, stages, activities, and the number of people included.

If you wish to plan a Premium Camino with us, you can contact us at info@zococamino.com.

For us, every season on the Camino de Santiago has its charm. The best time to do it depends more on your personality and travel preferences.

May and September offer pleasant weather and fewer tourists compared to the summer months.

Between March and April, Easter is celebrated with many religious representations, and we also get the first signs of spring.

From June to August, summer takes over, with warmer weather, although temperatures in Galicia are usually not as high as in the rest of Spain. There are more tourists, and the Camino has a livelier atmosphere.

October is the perfect month to experience a change of season and enjoy the colors of nature, the falling leaves, and the beautiful sunsets that autumn provides.
